Overview
Maternal mortality remains a pressing challenge in Uganda, with an alarming statistic of 16 women dying daily from preventable causes. Common issues contributing to these deaths include hemorrhage, obstructed labor, sepsis, and shortages of essential maternal health supplies. The government’s failure to meet its human rights obligations exacerbates the crisis.
Project Goal
To reduce maternal mortality by applying a human rights-based approach that ensures expectant mothers in Eastern Central Uganda have equitable access to essential maternal health services.
Strategic Interventions
- Advocacy Through a Human Rights Lens:
- FLEP advocates for maternal health as a fundamental human right, pushing for policy adherence and action at both district and community levels.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with district local governments, community leaders, and healthcare providers to create a collective effort for improving maternal health access.
- Partnership with Legal Experts:
- Work alongside CEHURD to integrate legal expertise, emphasizing the importance of holding authorities accountable for their human rights obligations.
Implementation and Community Involvement
- Conduct educational sessions to empower communities to understand and advocate for their rights.
- Engage local leaders and health management committees in efforts to improve maternal health outcomes.
- Promote accountability through dialogue sessions and workshops with policymakers.
