FLEP’s Comprehensive Approach to HIV/AIDS
FLEP is dedicated to addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Uganda through a holistic approach encompassing prevention, care, and control. Our work is aligned with national strategies, such as the Ministry of Health’s Strategic Plan 2020–2025, and supports the ambitious goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
What We Do
- Prevention:
- Conduct community outreach and education to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention.
- Target key populations with tailored interventions to reduce HIV risk.
- Care:
- Provide HIV counseling, testing (HCT), and referrals for antiretroviral therapy (ART) through our network of health centers.
- Ensure people living with HIV/AIDS have access to life-saving treatment and ongoing support.
- Control:
- Focus on behavior change and engagement with high-risk groups, including fishing communities and sex workers.
- Advocate for policies that strengthen HIV/AIDS programs and protect the rights of affected individuals.
Our Specific Interventions
- HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT): Empower individuals to know their HIV status and seek timely care.
- Risk Reduction Education: Provide information on safe practices and methods to prevent HIV transmission.
- ART Referrals: Facilitate access to antiretroviral therapy for individuals diagnosed with HIV.
- Community Engagement: Use edutainment, drama groups, and leader training to promote awareness and reduce stigma.
- Key Populations: Offer tailored services for fishing communities, sex workers, and adolescents.
- Advocacy Efforts: Push for policies supporting HIV/AIDS care, prevention, and control.
Aligning with National Strategies
FLEP’s work contributes directly to the Ministry of Health’s objectives, including:
- Reducing the burden of communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS.
- Expanding access to PrEP and PEP for high-risk populations.
- Strengthening pharmaceutical supply systems to ensure availability of drugs and testing kits.
- Engaging stakeholders to support HIV/AIDS programs.
Our efforts also support the Triple 95-95-95 goal:
- 95% of people with HIV know their status.
- 95% of those diagnosed are on sustained ART.
- 95% of those on treatment achieve viral suppression.
Impact
- Reached thousands of individuals with HCT services and ART referrals annually.
- Reduced stigma and misinformation through community-based education.
- Supported Uganda’s national fight against HIV/AIDS with innovative, community-driven approaches.
